1. Purpose
Group Therapy: Focuses on therapeutic goals and offer emotional support and shared experiences among individuals dealing with similar challenges. It's designed to provide participants with tools and strategies to manage specific issues.
Support Groups: Aim is to only offer emotional support and shared experiences among individuals dealing with similar challenges. No therapeutic goals. The primary goal is mutual support and understanding rather than structured therapeutic outcomes.
2. Facilitation
Group Therapy: Led by a licensed mental health professional (e.g., therapist) trained to guide discussions, manage group dynamics, and apply evidence-based interventions.
Support Groups: Often facilitated by a peer or volunteer who has personal experience with the issue, though some may be led by professionals. The facilitator’s role is typically less directive.
3. Structure
Group Therapy: Has a structured format with specific goals, activities, and interventions. Sessions may follow a curriculum or treatment plan, and participation often requires a commitment to attend regularly for a set period.
Support Groups: Tend to be more flexible and open-ended. Members can join or leave as needed, and the focus is on sharing personal experiences and providing mutual encouragement.
4. Focus
Group Therapy: Centers on exploring underlying psychological issues and working towards behavioral or emotional change. Discussions are guided by therapeutic techniques and increasing empathy and mutual understanding of shared experiences.
Support Groups: Emphasize shared experiences and mutual understanding. Focus is more on empathy and solidarity than deep psychological exploration.
5. Confidentiality
Both prioritize confidentiality, but group therapy often has stricter confidentiality agreements due to the clinical nature of the discussions.
